Myofunctional Therapy
What is myofunctional therapy?
When might myofunctional therapy® be recommended?
- Mouth breathing
- Incorrect tongue resting position or tongue thrust
- Incorrect swallowing patterns
- Open mouth posture
- Clenching or grinding of the teeth (bruxism)
- Developing oral habits that may influence jaw or dental development
Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual.

Myofunctional therapy involves a series of guided exercises designed to improve muscle strength, coordination and awareness. Depending on your needs, these exercises may focus on breathing, tongue position, lip function, and swallowing patterns.

Your clinician will demonstrate the exercises, explain how to perform them correctly and monitor your progress during regular review appointments. Some exercises are completed during appointments, while others are practised at home as part of your treatment programme.

- Encourage healthy nasal breathing
- Support correct tongue resting position
- Improve swallowing patterns
- Promote healthy lip posture
- Support the goals of orthodontic treatment
