Expanders
Creating space for healthy jaw and tooth development
As children grow, their teeth and jaws don’t always develop at the same pace. When the upper jaw is too narrow, it can contribute to crowding, bite concerns, and other developmental issues.
At CFS Dental, palatal expanders may be recommended as part of an early orthodontic treatment plan to help guide jaw development while a child is still growing. Following a comprehensive assessment, we’ll determine whether an expander is appropriate for your child’s individual needs and explain the available treatment options.
What is a palatal expander?
A palatal expander is a custom-made orthodontic appliance designed to gradually widen the upper jaw.
Because the upper jaw is still developing during childhood, gentle expansion may create additional space for permanent teeth to erupt and help improve the way the upper and lower jaws fit together.
Not every child requires an expander. Treatment is only recommended where appropriate following a comprehensive assessment of your child’s dental development, bite, and jaw growth.
When might an expander be recommended?
An expander may be considered if your child has signs of:
- A narrow upper jaw
- Crowded or developing crowded teeth
- Crossbite
- Bite development concerns
- Limited space for permanent teeth to erupt
Early assessment allows us to monitor these concerns as your child grows and determine whether treatment may be beneficial.
How does treatment work?
Every child develops differently, so treatment is tailored to their individual needs.
If an expander is recommended, it will be custom-made to fit your child’s mouth. The appliance is gradually adjusted over time to gently widen the upper jaw while growth is still occurring.
We’ll explain how the appliance works, show you how to care for it, and arrange regular review appointments to monitor your child’s progress throughout treatment.

Why early treatment
can be beneficial
When appropriate, early orthodontic treatment may help guide jaw development before growth is complete.
Depending on your child’s individual circumstances, treatment with an expander may:
- Create additional space for permanent teeth to erupt
- Support healthy jaw development
- Improve bite alignment
- Reduce the severity of developing orthodontic concerns
- Assist with planning future orthodontic treatment where required
Not every child benefits from early intervention. In many cases, monitoring growth over time is the most appropriate approach. We’ll always recommend treatment based on your child’s individual needs.
Your questions, answered.
Can’t find what you’re after?
We’re always happy to talk it through.
At what age might my child need an expander?
The most appropriate timing depends on your child’s stage of growth and jaw development. Following an orthodontic assessment, we’ll discuss whether treatment may be beneficial and, if so, when it should begin.
